About the Community:

We have moved into the 21st century where everything is at hand to lead the cosiest lives possible but in India there is a community that languishes at the bottom of the society not by choice but caste system and continues to battle its fate to see a better day. These were called untouchables for centuries and have been treated with utmost inhumane nature and now they are called Dalits.

Dalits make up 16% of the 1.2 billion people in India and are living under extreme poverty ever since they were subjected to the brutal and insane caste system. Hindu religion has been the religion in the dark to the West and the rest of the world for a long time and its caste system has come to light during the colonial rule of British. According to the Hindus Brahma created the world and the Dalits were not part of his creation; which makes them aliens to the niceties of life and deserving to feed off the garbage. These are the sort of backward and illiterate ideas that still occupy the people’s minds in most parts of this country and the change is far from coming into existence.

India has followed the caste system for over 3000 years and the sad part of all this is that it’s still very much part of the present society. The so called upper castes do not want to see the face of a Dalit or help them in anyway they can. If a Dalit dies no one in the community cares about him but they do if one of their cows dies, such is the situation in India where a Dalit fights everyday for his potion of meal to keep liv ing to see a day where he could be a free man.

They do not have proper clothes to wear and home to live in. It is such an unfortunate condition that the present India has as it is still yet to make full efforts to eradicate this discrimination. If Dalits belonged to a different race they would have attracted more global attention but since all are Indians discrimination among them do not call for greater attention. But this is worse than racism or any sort of discriminat ion there ever was in the history of humanity.

Every parent wants and hopes a better future for their children but that in this world where money is everything makes the dream of a Dalit parent almost impossible. They do not have access to the basic needs like clean water, food, accommodation, sanitation. The money they earn is barely enough to buy food.

In any society people who crawl at the bottom of the social order take ways that are neither helpful for them nor the s ociety. Most of them become criminals and they do, not because they want to but were made to by the oppressive environment they live in. How far will this discrimination go on for? Will there be an end to all of this?

The vision of ABC Barnajalp-India

We certainly hope that every mother of a Dalit child fulfils her dream of seeing a better day for her child in this country. To remove a blot that’s been on the Indian social system for many centuries takes time; years maybe decades, but if we continue to work with a hope to create a better future for them we certainly can reach there.

The first and most important thing to build a proper society is through education. It is the backbone for the development of an individual and sadly enough education is not a priority in Dalit community as the children at very young age get into working for very meagre wages or sometimes nothing; in other words they are victims of child labour. But what can parents do if they cannot feed their children let alone get them education; these are the problems they face with everyday and every generation. The ignorance and illiteracy of the parents are passed on to their children who in turn end up on the streets fighting for their survival.

Main Goal:

To tackle this condition in this community the main goal of ABC BARNAHJALP- INDIA is to create interest among children in education so they can earn themselves a living when they grow up. Parents send them to work so they can earn their own food but the kids end up starving everyday anyway.

So our plan is to have a set up where we can get kids to learn something and fill their stomachs. To encourage this we have decided to set up evening schools in villages where we provide food and education. Education alone was not going to attract many children but if we can provide food as well parents will make sure they send their kids to school and not to work.

There are churches in every village in India and the pastors have offered to join with us in helping these children. They have offered to give their churches to conduct evening schools and promised to help us in any way they can in looking after these children. They consider it as a blessing as more families could become part of their church making it bigger and better. Although we are at the beginning stage in making this project come into existence, our vision is to expand this to almost all the villages so that every child would learn the values of life and be happy.

Evening School Project is aimed at developing the backward community in India where thechildren live on the streets and starve to death. Its objective is to tackle the poverty and illiteracy of that community where large percent of them are Christians, who are looking for someone to give them a helping hand.

Abc Barnahjalp-India has esablished Evening schools in fifty villages. These schools are run in local churches under the supervision of the pastors. Each school has a teacher and a helper. Children go to school in the evenings and learn their lessons.

Children recieve books, clothes, soaps, tooth brush and paste and medical care for free from the Evening schools.Parents are very happy about the evening schools as it is a dream for many of them who never expected their children to go to school.

We are very grateful to all sponsors of Evening school children and we hope there will be more sponsors in the days to come. We are also praying and hoping we will be able to start Evening schools in more villages.

Best regards
